The old town walk with audio guide and wine tasting

A host meets you by the windmill on the causeway, hands out an audio device and headphones, and you walk the peninsula at your own pace past more than 15 numbered landmarks before a tasting at a winery in the old town. Pick it if you want a commentary in your ears and a glass at the end without being tied to a group for two hours.

Old Town Walk with Audio Guide & Wine Tasting

About this experience

Be clear about the format before you book: this is an audio-guided walk, not a guide walking beside you. A host from Audio Guide Bulgaria meets the group near the windmill, the one that stands in the middle of the causeway between the new town and the old. You get a device and headphones with the commentary in English, Polish, Russian, Bulgarian or German, a route past more than 15 landmarks, and a number to key in at each stop. Then you go at whatever pace you like. The tour ends with a wine tasting at a local winery and finishes back at the meeting point.

The stops the operator lists elsewhere for the same route are the ones you would pick yourself: the windmill, St Stephen with its 1599 frescoes, the unfinished St John Aliturgetos above the south shore, Christ Pantocrator, the open ruin of St Sophia, the basilica of the Holy Mother Eleusa on the north shore, St John the Baptist and the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The commentary gets you from one to the next and tells you what you are looking at. That matters in a town where the 40-churches legend is repeated on every sign and the museum itself has records for 23.

Two caveats. Church and museum admissions are not included; the listing names St Stephen explicitly, and the museum price list puts it at 4.60 euros, the small churches at 2.56 euros each. And the old town itself is free and crossed on foot in 15 minutes, so what you pay for is the commentary and the wine. If you only want the commentary, the museum rents its own audio device for 3.07 euros; see our churches and tickets guide. If you only want the wine, book the Messembria tasting on its own.

  • Audio commentary in English, German, Polish, Russian and Bulgarian
  • More than 15 numbered landmarks, from the windmill to the churches on the north shore
  • Walk at your own pace: stop for coffee, skip a church, come back to one
  • A wine tasting at a winery inside the old town to finish
  • Runs daily, two hours, and the cheapest of the eight tours on this site

How the day runs

  1. StartMeet the host at the windmill

The windmill stands on the causeway, just under 400 metres long, between the bus station side and the old town. The host hands out the devices and headphones and explains the numbering.

  2. First 30 minThe gate, the walls and St Stephen

In through the 5th-century fortification wall by the entrance, then St Stephen, the church with 258 fresco compositions. Pay the 4.60 euros at the door if you want to go in; the audio works from outside too.

  3. Middle hourRound the peninsula

St John Aliturgetos on the south cliffs, Christ Pantocrator on the main square (fenced off for restoration in recent seasons, so seen from outside), St Sophia, then the north shore ruins and the smaller churches in the lanes.

  4. Last 20 minWine tasting

The route ends at a winery in the old town for a tasting of local wines. The operator's other listings give this part about 20 minutes.

  5. FinishBack to the windmill

You return the device at the meeting point. Bus 1 to Sunny Beach leaves from the station by the walls every 10 to 15 minutes for 1 euro.

Tips before you book

  • Arrive at the windmill, not at the museum: it is on the causeway, about halfway between the bus station and the old-town gate.
  • Decide before you start which churches you will pay for. St Stephen (4.60 euros) is the one with the frescoes; the combined ticket for every museum site is 17.90 euros and only pays off if you go into all of them.
  • In July and August the main lane is packed by mid-morning. Book the earliest slot the calendar offers.
  • The listing says the walk is designed for adults. Older children who like history manage it; toddlers in a buggy on the cobbles will not.
  • Bring a passport or ID if you plan to buy bottles at the winery, and cash in euros for the church doors.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Nessebar old town walk a guided tour?

It is audio-guided. A host meets you at the windmill and hands out devices and headphones; the commentary at each of the 15-plus stops is recorded, in English, German, Polish, Russian or Bulgarian. Nobody walks beside you for the two hours, which is also why you can go at your own pace.

Are the church tickets included?

No. The listing names St Stephen as not included, and the same goes for the other museum sites. In 2026 St Stephen and the Archaeological Museum cost 4.60 euros each, the small churches and the windmill 2.56 euros, the Ethnographic Museum 3.07 euros. You buy them at each door.

Where does the walk start and end?

Near the windmill on the causeway that links the new town to the peninsula. The tour ends back at the same spot after the wine tasting, a short walk from the bus station where bus 1 leaves for Sunny Beach.

How is this different from the wine tasting on its own?

The walk gives you two hours of commentary and a short tasting at the end. The Messembria tasting is an hour or more in the winery with a host, five or six wines and focaccia, and no walk. Many people do both on different days.
