Booking choice: The old town walk with wine tasting, from $18 per person. Check dates Tour details
The peninsula is a town, not a park. You can walk through the gate at 7 a.m. in January and nobody will stop you. What changes with the calendar is everything else: the small museum churches, the windmill, the excursion boats off the north jetty, the Sunny Beach shuttle boats, the restaurants along the south shore and the crowds. Most of it switches on in April, hits full power in June, and switches off again in the second week of October.
This is the 2027 season as it stands on 30 October 2026, from the museum's published schedule and the transport pattern of recent summers. For the ticket prices themselves, see our churches and tickets guide.
The quick answer
The Archaeological Museum and St Stephen open every day of the year. The three small churches, the Ethnographic Museum and the windmill open from 1 April and close to walk-ins after 12 October. Boats run roughly May to early October. June and September give you warm sea and a walkable main lane; July and August give you the crowds and the long 9 to 7 museum hours.
When does the 2027 season start in Nessebar?
For the paid sights, 1 April. For the boats, when the weather settles in May. For the crowds, the second week of June.
The museum's hours page splits the year into five periods, and those periods have been the same shape for years. The published table is still headed 2025 and the museum has not posted a 2027 version yet, but the breakpoints below are what to expect. Check the page the week you travel.
Two sites never shut: the Archaeological Museum by the gate and St Stephen with its 1599 frescoes. The rest (St John the Baptist, St Spas, St Paraskeva, the Ethnographic Museum and the windmill) is "upon request" from January to the end of March and again from 13 October. You ask at the museum desk and someone may walk over with a key. Do not plan a winter day around it.
Note the lunch break. From May the small churches close 2:00 to 2:30 p.m., and in April they close 1:30 to 2:00. Turn up at 2:05 in July and you stand in the sun for 25 minutes.
| Period | Archaeological Museum and St Stephen | Small churches, Ethnographic Museum, windmill |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Jan to 31 Mar | Daily 9:00 to 17:00 | On request only |
| 1 Apr to 30 Apr | Daily 9:00 to 17:00 | 9:30 to 13:30 and 14:00 to 17:00 |
| 1 May to 1 Jun | Daily 9:00 to 18:00 | 10:30 to 14:00 and 14:30 to 18:00 |
| 2 Jun to 14 Sep | Daily 9:00 to 19:00 | 10:30 to 14:00 and 14:30 to 19:00 |
| 15 Sep to 12 Oct | Daily 9:00 to 18:00 | 10:30 to 14:00 and 14:30 to 18:00 |
| 13 Oct to 31 Dec | Daily 9:00 to 17:00 | On request only |
When do the boats start running again?
The Sunny Beach shuttle and the excursion boats are seasonal. Expect them from May, every 20 to 30 minutes in high summer, and gone by mid October.
Nothing sails in winter. The little boats that link the north jetty with Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas and the Perla south beach run on a summer timetable, 10:00 to 22:00 at the peak, and stop entirely out of season. The same goes for the bookable trips. The 4-hour boat trip and the family catamaran both anchor for a swim, and nobody books a swim stop in April. Check the listing calendars from late April; the first dates usually appear for May and the schedule thickens in June.
Bus 1 from Sunny Beach is the one thing that runs all year, though the dense summer timetable (every 10 to 15 minutes) starts in early June. Out of season the gaps are longer. Our Sunny Beach to Nessebar guide covers the bus, the road train and the one-hour shore walk.
The old town walk runs daily all year, and the winery at the end is warm in October.
Check dates for the old town walk with wine tastingWhich months are crowded, and when is the main lane empty?
July and August are packed from mid morning. May, June and the last three weeks of September are the sweet spot. Winter is almost deserted.
UNESCO's own monitoring report describes the town as "a crowded tourist attraction in summer and an almost empty place in winter", and that is exactly how it feels. The municipality has been quoted at over 30,000 visitors a day in peak summer. The whole peninsula is about 850 metres long and 350 wide. Do the arithmetic.
The hour matters more than the month. Coaches from Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas and the Varna resorts arrive between 10 and 11. Before 9 you have the lanes, the fishermen on the south quay and the cats. After 6 the day-trippers thin out and the restaurants fill. From Sunny Beach, take the 8 a.m. bus, see the churches, leave the peninsula to the coaches and come back for dinner.
Cruise calls add a second wave. Ships tie up at the port behind the ancient theatre and the lanes fill an hour earlier. Black Sea cruising has been thin since 2022 and we found no published 2027 schedule for Nessebar. If a ship is in the bay when you wake up, do the beach first and the old town at 4.

What happens in Nessebar on 15 August?
The town's feast day: the Assumption of the Virgin, the patron of the only working church in the old town. Expect a liturgy, a procession and a packed evening.
Nessebar's official holiday is 15 August, fixed by a municipal council decision in 1992 and reported each year by BTA. The day belongs to the Church of the Assumption, consecrated in 1894, the one functioning Orthodox church inside the walls and free to enter. It is not a museum, so cover shoulders that morning.
It falls in the busiest fortnight of the year, so the feast adds locals and Bulgarian holidaymakers to an already full town. The municipality builds an evening programme round it; for 2026 BTA's preview promised a concert by the singer Vasil Naydenov and a full festive programme. If you want the quiet Nessebar, this is the one day to be somewhere else. If you want to see the town celebrate itself rather than sell itself, it is the best day of the summer.
Which months have warm sea and good weather?
June to September for swimming. May and October are walkable and cheap, with the sea at 16 to 20 degrees.
The Black Sea here warms late and cools late. Average sea temperatures run 16 °C in May, 22 °C in June, 26 °C in July and August, 24 °C in September and 19 °C in October. Air in August averages about 28 °C with three or four rain days. July averages 23 °C, January about 2 °C.
June to September is the swim-stop range. For walking the churches, April, May and October beat July. The Blue Flag south beach has lifeguards only from 1 June to 30 September, which is the honest definition of the beach season.
| Month | Sea | Old town | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| April | Cold | Small churches reopen, quiet | Walk and museums, no boats |
| May | 16 °C | Boats start, lanes calm | Best value month |
| June | 22 °C | Full hours from the 2nd, filling up | Swim and sightsee before the 15th |
| July to August | 26 °C | Packed 10 to 6, feast on 15 Aug | Go early, leave by 11 |
| September | 24 °C | Crowds fade after the 15th | The month we would pick |
| October | 19 °C | Small churches close after the 12th | Cheap, still swimmable early on |
What should you book ahead for 2027?
The wine tasting (ten seats) and the two catamarans. Nothing else in Nessebar sells out.
Most of Nessebar needs no ticket at all. The museum sells its own door tickets, the audio device costs 3.07 euros and the old town takes 15 minutes to cross. The things that do fill up are small. The Messembria wine tasting takes ten people at a time and is marked as likely to sell out through the summer; book it two or three days ahead in July and August. The family catamaran runs limited dates and the listing flags it as a rare find. The Sunny Beach sunset catamaran, the best-rated boat on this coast, sells out on calm evenings in August.
Everything cancels free up to 24 hours before, so book the boat early and drop it if the forecast turns. For who should book what, read our comparison of all eight tours.

Ten seats, five or six dry Bulgarian wines and focaccia from the oven. Book it before the catamaran, not after.

Is old Nessebar open in winter?
The town is always open and free to walk. The Archaeological Museum and St Stephen open daily 9:00 to 17:00 from 13 October to 30 April. The small churches, the Ethnographic Museum and the windmill are on request only in that period, and the boats do not run.
When do the small churches reopen in 2027?
On the published schedule, 1 April, with hours of 9:30 to 13:30 and 14:00 to 17:00 through April, then longer hours from 1 May. The museum had not posted a 2027 table at the time of writing, so check the hours page before you go.
What is the best month to visit Nessebar?
September. The sea is still 24 degrees, the museum keeps 9 to 6 hours until 12 October, and the coach crowds fall away after the middle of the month. June runs it close. Avoid the fortnight around 15 August if crowds bother you.
Do I need to book the Nessebar boats in advance?
The Sunny Beach shuttle boats are walk-on. The bookable trips are worth reserving a few days ahead in July and August, when calm-evening sailings fill. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before on all of them.
